  • Billabong Pro Tahiti: Final Day

The 2015 Billabong Pro Tahiti is in the books! It was an amazing final day of competition with raw emotion from start to finish.

The day started off with round 5 action in overhead surf and clean offshore winds. The highlights of the round included strong performances from Italo Ferreira, Owen Wright, CJ Hobgood, Jeremy Flores and last year's champ, Gabriel Medina. CJ Hobgood used his last minute heroics more than once on the final day dispatching wildcard Aritz Aranburu from the competition in his early morning heat, and again in the form of a win over Josh Kerr in the dying moments of their heat.

In the semifinals it was Owen Wright vs Gabriel Medina and Jeremy Flores vs CJ Hobgood. Gabriel came out of the gates swinging and used his competitive tenacity to have Owen up against the ropes the entire heat. Gabriel easily saw his way to the final after Owen failed to get into rhythm. In semifinal number two CJ went to work right off the bat mid range scores that kept him busy as Jeremy waited patiently out the back for bigger scores. In the end, Jeremy's patience paid off, but not without CJ putting up a fight in the end.

The final was a one sided affair with Jeremy coming out firing with a near-perfect 9.87 on his first wave. He then backed this up with a 7-point ride and left Gabriel needing a 9.71 for the remainder of the heat. Jeremy proved to be the victor as the final horn sounded, and it was a fitting ending as Flores had racked up some of the highest heat scores throughout the comp, surfing with perfect technique on his backhand. CJ Hobgood was also awarded with the Andy Irons Commitment Award for his hard charging throughout the contest, and expressed his appreciation for the award and how much it meant to him in a post heat interview.

It was another successful Billabong Pro Tahiti event with beautiful waves and wonderful vibes throughout the whole contest. A huge thanks goes out to all of the local Tahitian people for always welcoming the event and people into their homes. We'll see everyone again next year!
