Billabong Salt Creek Junior Team Challenge
On Saturday, September 9th board riders clubs and juniors surfers from around Southern California converged on Salt Creek beach for the Billabong Salt Creek Junior Team Challenge. The surf was forecasted to be less than stellar, but when everyone rocked up at sunrise on Saturday morning we were pleasantly surprised to see more than contestable waves on tap.
The format for the event saw teams from Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Seal Beach competing in one hour long tag team heats that required each surfer to catch two waves. In the early round heats Dana Hills came out looking like the team to beat with plenty of momentum and energy. As the day progressed we started to see the field even out with Newport Harbor and Laguna Beach going neck and neck into the finals. Just before the finals of the board riders division there was a high school challenge that had teams from all four regions- Laguna Beach High School, Newport Harbor, Dana Hills and San Clemente- facing off in a one hour tag team heat. All teams surfed strong but by the time the hour finished Dana Hills came out on top and won $500 for their efforts. Not going home empty handed, all of the other high schools walked away with a cool $100.
In the finals of the board riders division it was an absolute nail biter until the final horn blew. Dana Hills started off in front, then Laguna Beach made a comeback and seemed like they'd taken the win. Everyone gathered on the beach after for the awards and it was revealed that Newport Board Riders had won with a consistent strategy throughout the entire hour long heat that paid off and saw them snagging $500 for the win.
All in all it was an amazing day for board riders clubs and junior surfing in Southern California. Every kid walked away with a backpack full of goodies and is psyched up for next year's Billabong Salt Creek Junior Team Challenge.
