Code Red: Teahupo'o, 2011
On August 27, 2011 the Billabong Pro Tahiti was called off for the day. Not for a lack of waves - for the opposite reason fact. Teahpuo'o was firing in a way unlike ever before and the Tahitian government placed the entire coastline under a 'Code Red' advisory, prohibiting most craft from entering the water. Deep, dark 20'+ waves were pounding the shallow reef and Billabong rider Dylan Longbottom and former team rider Laurie Towner were on hand for what's gone down as one of the greatest tow sessions of all time and certainly the best Chopes has ever seen. "When you look back and think of all the swells you've surfed, when I look back, that's probably going to be one of the biggest," Towner reminisces, "I don't know if there's ever going to be a bigger swell at Tahiti."
The Billabong Pro Tahiti window opens August 19, 2016. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter for more pre-event coverage.
