Day 1 of the Billabong Pipe Masters
Day 1 of the Billabong Pipe Masters opened with beautiful 6 foot Backdoor gems rolling through, one right after another. As if the epic waves weren't enough, the morning started with intense heats from the beginning, with many tour spots are on the line and the first 3 heats saw epic battles as Patrick Gudauskas, Damien Hobgood and Alejo Muniz willed themselves into Round 2 with beautiful barrels.
Beautiful Backdoor almost never gets surfed without injury and we were reminded of this scary fact in Heat 4 when Kierren Perrow, surfing his last CT heat, dislocated his arm after falling on a set wave.
Ryan Callinan was a last minute wildcard for the Pipe Masters, but the kid looked more than prepared sending Dane Reynolds packing in Round 1 and battling till the end with SeaBass in Round 2. Photo: Pat Stacy

Yadin Nicol is another surfer who is close to falling off tour, but he surfed confident and overcame local favorite Kahea Hart in Round 1. Photo: Cestari/ASP
Dusty Payne often finds Backdoor to be his playground, this was very true in Rounds 1 and 2. Photo: Cestari/ASP
Kierren Perrow may have dislocated his shoulder, but it wasn't until after he got some good long visions. Photo: Cestari/ASP
Reason #1 we love Backdoor: the wave. Reason # 2 we love Backdoor: guess.
Kaimana Jaquias is another last minute wildcard into the event who was on fire. He beat Kierren Perrow in Round 1 then went on to defeat Filipe Toledo in Round 2, throwing away some good scores because he simply had too many. Photo: Cestari/ASP
We have forecast on the way and a world title to decide. Stay tuned for Round 3 of the Billabong Pipe Masters.
