#FBF to the Still Frothy weekend
Photos from the 5th Annual Billabong Still Frothy Surf Festival in Pismo Beach.
Sapphire and wood – Two items over history related to the 5th anniversary of an event. I don’t think two more fitting symbols could have represented this year’s 5th Annual Billabong Present’s Still Frothy Surf Festival. After 6 months of complete close out sandbars the surf gods once again parted the seas and produced very contestable sapphire blue right-handers peeling off the south side of the historical wooden Pismo pier. Every division was on fire throughout the weekend all the way from the 10 & under Groms to the battle of the legends. Saturday saw the groms fighting their way through preliminary heat to get to the finals on Sunday as well as Billabong team riders Jake Halstead & Rob Kelly inking a closely fought battle in the tow at air challenge against tying runner ups Noah Wegrich, Pat Curren, Shaun Burns & Austin Smith-Ford. Sunday the Groms got a chance to show their stuff in their finals that we’re mixed in with the pro-am heats and the 30-minute legend heat between Tom Curren & Sunny Garcia.
Liam Osborne (pictured) and Pitas Higgins were both throwing away scores of over 8 in the 10 & Under final. There were blow for blow waves, paddle battles and even spraying each other going on between these two.
The non-profit team challenge gave groms and old school local rippers a chance to surf with their heros/pros like Nate Tyler, Kalani Robb, Torrey Meister, Pat Curren, Johnny Redmond & Jake Halstead. The event provided $750 to the winning non-profit, The Feline Network, and $150 to the other non-profits: Ampsurf, Waves of Impact, The Young & Brave, Jared Allen’s Home for Wounded Warriors and Mauli Ola.
Pat Curren was not overshadowed by his dad, Tom Curren. Pat blitzed his way to a $500 win in the juniors, runner up in the tow at air challenge and the semis of the pro-am.
Kilian Garland battled 64 pro-am competitors at a level of surfing not seen in Pismo. Every heat saw amazing surfing. But when the sprays settled it was Kilian taking home the $1,500 and another $500 for the still frothiest human award.
The girl’s finalist had only smiles to show after the results were announced. They are always great sports to each other and were ripping as well.
Boys winner, Zane Booth, had to fight his way through local rippers as well as international rippers all the way from Costa Rica!
Legends and 4 world title between these two would have thought they were ready to settle down. But no way!
These two went out and were fired up to out do each other on every wave. We were blessed with waves for 30 minutes as these two fought a hard earned win for Tom. We all loved Tom’s quote as he humbled accepted his win at the trophy presentation. “Sunny beat me in Haleiwa. I got him back at Pismo Beach.”
Billabong Team rider Rob Kelly battled through 18 high flying jet ski assisted aerialists as well as 20 knot side shore wins to each take a home $1,000.
Not only did the girls do battle in the division of their own some of them took it to a few of the boys in the groms 10 & under division too!
Contest director and OG frothmeister, Walter Cerny, seriously ro sham bowed his way into this wave. Kalani Robb, Hugh Soderquist, Mike McCabe and Walt decided it was too nice of day to hassle for waves in this 3rd round heat and all ro-sham-bowed for priority. Walt got the best end of that deal and sealed an eight point ride with this wave.
