Follow the action at the 2008 Billabong Pro in Jeffreys Bay
The 2008 Billabong Pro got underway in pristine 1.5 to two metre waves at the fabled Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay at first light this morning. The fifth of 11 stops on the ASP World Tour presents a wide range of options on how to follow the action as the world’s top ranked surfers go to work in the planet’s premier high performance point break waves from now until 20 July.
First prize goes to those fortunate enough to be on the beach or the dunes in the superb natural amphitheatre that lines the rocky point at Supers listening to the expert commentary, statistics and wave by wave scoring as the competitors carve their way down the liquid runway.
For those unable to experience the live action, it is almost as good to be situated in front of a computer logged into www.billabongpro.com <http://www.billabongpro.com/> where the action is portrayed as it happens. The webcast features six camera angles, live scoring, commentary from some of the sport’s most knowledgeable experts, with whom you can interact via email, along with interviews, action replays and a Backstage section filled with behind the scenes activities at the event.
Commentators include SA surfing legend and 1977 world champion Shaun Tomson, Californians Dino Andino and Greg ‘GT’ Tomlinson and Australians Ronnie Blakey, Mitchell Ross and surfing icon Mark Occhilupo who will be roaming the contest site doing impromptu interviews.
Brazilian Roberto Perdigao handles the Portuguese commentary while Quirin Rohleder can be heard in French and Raul Garcia in Spanish.
In a first for an ASP World Tour event, the action at the Billabong Pro can also be followed via your mobile phone. Anyone with a 3G or WAP enabled phone can log onto www.asptogo.com <http://www.asptogo.com/> which will be updated in real time as per the webcast for event status, live scores, news, photos and video highlights along with World Tour ratings tables.
If you cannot follow the event live there is up to date coverage and interviews on radio news bulletins and shows countrywide, or sign up for email news releases on the billabongpro.com website site where there are fresh photo’s, transcripts of athlete interviews, profile information and even highlights packages from every heat available ‘on demand’ whenever it is suitable for you to enjoy them.
And everyone can relive the day’s action via television news coverage with footage captured by more than dozen local and international crews and available to TV stations worldwide via satellite, including coverage in South Africa on SABC, ETV or the daily highlights packages on the SuperSport channels.
These 15 minute highlights packages premiere daily on SuperSport Six at 10pm (except Thursday 17 July when the start time is 10.30pm) and are also repeated throughout the following day on various channels and times. See full schedule below, check www.supersport.co.za <http://www.supersport.co.za/> or press OK on any sports channel.
Even if none of the options outlined above are available to you, you can still stay abreast of the action by calling the Billabong Pro Hotline on 086 000 2008 which will be updated with the contest status twice daily
And finally you will be able to catch up on the previous day’s action in print with images and in-depth analysis of the state-of-play produced by the more than 100 A-list surfing and mainstream media personnel accredited at the event to service the daily and weekly newspapers and the glossy magazines.
