HUGE SURGE IN FREEWAVE CHALLENGE ENTRIES
VIDEO CLIPS OF EPIC TUBE RIDES ON DISPLAY AS FREE SURFING EVENT HEADS TO FINAL WEEK
NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- (September 15, 2008) -- As the Billabong Freewave Challenge Mainland edition heads into its final week, a flood of entries from all coasts of the USA have totally changed the complexion of the virtual free-surfing event. Video clips of Hurricane-fueled rides on the East and Gulf Coasts have turned the coveted Best Barrel category upside down with some amazing disappearing acts -- while a surge of female submissions have unexpectedly made the Heartbreaker division the most popular of all. To immediately view the latest clips click on the Freewave Video Hub <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/> .
Among the remarkable tube rides captured on video in recent days are Jesse Hines <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/349/Jesse-Hines-mental-tube-during-Hurricane-Ike-Outer-Banks> in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Baron Knowlton <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/371/Baron-Knowlton> at West Palm Beach, Florida, Cory Lopez <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/347/Cory-Lopez-Daytona-Florida-Tuberide> at Daytona Beach, Florida, Zander Morton <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/350/Zander-Morton-Gulf-Coast-Barrel> at a secret spot on Florida's Gulf Coast and an unidentified full-suit warrior getting a deep and frothy pit at Long Beach Island <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/346/HEAVY-New-Jersey-Barrel> , New Jersey. The top tube of the season will earn the rider $3000 and the videographer $750 -- as long as their identities are known.
Meanwhile, the Heartbreaker Female Performance category has suddenly emerged as the most competitive division in the entire Freewave event, for now surpassing the number of entries received for Monster Maneuver. Leading the charge is 16-year-old Hawaiian phenom Carissa Moore <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/339/Carissa-Moore-2> with several radical performances at California's Upper Trestles. Moore is also eligible in the Small Fries division where she will be rated head-on against all 16 and under surfers regardless of gender. Also appearing in a spate of newly-uploaded clips is Australian pro Claire Bevilacqua <http://mainland8.freewavechallenge.net/video/361/Claire-Bevilacqua-backside-floater-and-big-hack-in-Encinitas> at a variety of San Diego County surf spots from Encinitas to Oceanside.
The Billabong Freewave Mainland is open to all rides by all surfers at all surf spots on the East, West and Gulf Coasts of the USA during the summer season from June 20 to September 22, 2008. The rides must be captured on video and take place outside of a regular surf contest. Finalists in each of five categories (Monster Maneuver, Small Fries, Best Barrel, Heartbreaker Female Performance and Longest Ride) will be named at the end of September and the winners will be revealed in mid-October. Surfers and videographers will share $40,000 in prize money. For full details and rules see the event website at www.FreewaveChallenge.com.
