Ready, set, Go TAJ!!!
It's Trestles time and Taj Burrow is certainly no stranger to this world-famous surfing reserve. He's been coming here since the event was born eleven years ago and has scored some pretty good results in the process. Last year, after 15 years on Tour, he nailed his first Trestles win against Julian Wilson, putting on a clinical display in the air. We've taken a look back through the trestles archives just in case you missed something over the last 11 years.
In 2003, Trestles saw a 25 year old Taj Burrow surfing his way through the final heat against Richie Lovett who took the victory off of Taj in a classic grand finale showdown. Lovett began the final with a commanding backhand attack to lock in an 8.0. The 30-year-old then maintained a slight edge, sealing his maiden WCT victory and knocking Taj our with the final’s best single ride - an 8.07. Photo: ASP
The forecast for the 2005 comp was epic - 3 foot and offshore were on the menu. Taj shredded his way through the competition with ease... that is, until he drew Kelly Slater in the semifinals and was sent packing.
During Trestles 2006 Taj Burrow was number 2 in the rankings and had made it to the semi finals after defeating Rob Machado, Cory Lopez, Roy Powers, Occy and Victor Ribas. However it was Bede Durbidge who took Taj out of the picture and shocked the surfing world by winning the event.
In 2008 Taj was out there to Win. He was ripping so hard coming into his final against Kelly Slater and wasted no time putting the pressure on. With Kelly slater in a combo situation things where looking good... Until, with 2 minutes left on the clock, searching for an 8.93, Slater pulls out a 9.27 and takes the victory from Taj. Photo: ASP
In 2010, after a great display of power-surfing, Taj went down to Dane Reynolds in the quarterfinal by 1.9 pts. In 2012, history repeats with Taj (16.50) getting knocked by Mick Fanning (16.50) during the quarterfinals. Photo: ASP
2013 - Despite Julian Wilson's multiple air-reverses, Burrow edged him out with clean, classic carves to take the Trestles 2013 win. Photo: ASP
