• Team Finishes the WQS Season Strong!

The Billabong team finished the 2016 World Qualifying Series season with strong results at the World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach when it counted most.

With much bigger surf than forecasted and a lot on the line, it was a dramatic day at Sunset Beach. The day began with Frederico Morais needing to make at least the quarterfinals to qualify for the 2017 World Tour.

Freddy was a standout the entire event and used his powerful surfing to make it all the way into the final. Fred finished second, solidified himself on the 2017 World Tour and took a strong lead in the Triple Crown race and ultimately finishing third on the WQS rankings for the year.

Another standout during Sunset and the entire WQS season was 18-year-old Ethan Ewing. Ethan had locked up his spot on the World Tour prior to Sunset, but that didn’t stop him from charging hard at the first two events of the Triple Crown of Surfing. Ethan had quarterfinal finishes at both the Hawaiian Pro and Sunset which earned him the prestigious Triple Crown Rookie of the Year award. Ethan finished second in the overall WQS rankings for 2016.

Jack Freestone also put on a great performance at Sunset Beach the entire event. He finished equal fifth and re-qualified for the 2017 World Tour season by one spot with clutch surfing.

The Billabong team is now poised for the start of the Billabong Pipe Masters, and we’re looking forward to seeing all five of our Billabong team riders - Italo Ferreira, Jack Freestone, Ethan Ewing, Frederico Morais and Joel Parkinson - on the 2017 World Tour.
