The North Shore Journal- Day Three
Today started with a biting of the fingernails. The expected NW swell was here as promised, but at first glance it seemed to be doubling up and a bit unorganized. Then, the first heat took to the water, and the day got better, and better, and better…And then it went off…
By all accounts, the standouts included Mason Ho who pretty much toyed with Pipe and Backdoor. Kelly Slater and his extremely late drops to deep pits, and Mick Fanning for his hard charging precision.
The standout heat of the day, competition, year basically, was Mick, John John and Kelly. The waves were A+ Pipeline and each surfer excelled. In the end, Mick took the win.
John John Florence was surfing extremely well, as expected, but it was CJ Hobgood, a man in his final event on tour, that ousted surfing’s current poster boy at pumping Pipeline in their round 5 heat. It was by far the biggest upset of the day.
The quarterfinals are now set! Felipe Toledo is out of the World Title race and it is now down to Adriano de Souza, Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina. Tomorrow it will all be decided and promises to be one of the best finishes of all time!
