DIY: The Piña Colada Recipe
Nothing says vacation like a piña colada. Refreshing, cold, and oh so sweet, this tropical drink puts the cherry on top of any holiday. Not on vacation? No time off? No bikini in sight? No problem. Instantly transport yourself to the Caribbean with just one sip.
The piña colada is one of the oldest and most trusted tropical frozen drinks. History notes it was first concocted in the 1950s in Puerto Rico, though the original creator has never been verified. Three different mixologists have taken credit for the sweet, creamy cocktail, but not one can prove their story. Legend has it, the Caribe Hilton, a luxury resort in Puerto Rico, was the first to serve the concoction. Bartender, Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, was given the task to create a drink that would capture the essence and tastes of the island. He allegedly worked on the recipe for months before settling on the perfect combination of rum, cream of coconut, and pineapple juice. But another bartender at the same hotel claim he was the one who invented the frothy, frozen drink. But who knows? And, really, who cares when there are piña coladas to make?
This summer, we are sharing two fantastic piña colada recipes — the 1950s Caribe Hotel version, and a dairy free mocktail recipe for those on a restricted diet. Blend and serve the cocktail to add a retro touch to any pool party, or take it down to the beach for an oceanside treat. Or, heck, just blend one up for a mid-week pick me up!
